1. ‘Mustard’ is related to ‘Seed’ in the same way as ‘Carrot’ is related to

(a) Fruit       (b) Stem       (c) Flower     (d) Root        (e) None of these

Solution: Though Mustard is a plant, it’s seeds are more commonly used. Carrot is a root. Answer: Root

 

2. Four of the following five are alike in a certain way and so form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to that group?

(a) Cup        (b) Jug         (c) Tumbler  (d) Plate       (e) Pitcher

Solution: Cup, Jug, Tumbler, Pitcher are used to store liquids. Plate is generally flat and though one can keep some liquid in a plate, it is not the primary use. Answer: Plate

 

3. Four of the following five are alike in a certain way and so form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to that group?

(a) Copper    (b) Mercury  (c) Iron         (d) Aluminium       (e) Zinc

Solution: Copper, Iron, Aluminium, Zinc are solids at room temperature whereas Mercury is in liquid state. Answer: Mercury

 

4. ‘FI’ is related to ‘LO’ in the same way as ‘PS’ is related to

(a) VY           (b) VZ           (c) WZ           (d) UX           (e) None of these

Solution: FI stands for 6-9. LO stands for 12-15. PS is 16-19. Adding 6 to both, we get 22-25 which is VY. Answer: VY

 

5. Four of the following five are alike in a certain way and so form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to that group?

(a) 217                   (b) 143                   (c) 241                   (d) 157                   (e) 181

Solution: This question has two answers. 217 and 143 as these are composite numbers. 217 = 7*31 and 143 = 11*13. Rest are prime numbers. Answer: 217 and 143

 

6. K is brother of T. M is mother of K. W is brother of M. How is W related to T?

(a) Maternal Uncle (b) Paternal Uncle  (c) Grandfather      (d) Data inadequate         (e) None of these

Solution: No need to draw relation tree as this is a simple question. K is brother of T and M is mother of K, making M mother of T. This will make W, T’s Maternal Uncle. Answer: Maternal Uncle

 

7. ‘Gram’ is related to ‘Mass’ in the same way as ‘Centimeter’ is related to?

(a) Area        (b) Volume   (c) Length    (d) Sound     (e) Energy

Solution: Mass is measured in grams. The same way, cm scale will be used to measure length. Answer: Length

 

8. Four of the following five are alike in a certain way and so form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to that group?

(a) 12           (b) 28           (c) 52           (d) 68           (e) 96

Solution: Factors of 12 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12. (Tip: While solving the question, if the logic works for two-three options, it works for the rest; so don’t check for all.) Factors of 68 = 1, 2, 4, 17, 34, 68. Factors of 52 = 1, 2, 4, 13, 26, 52. Even by observation, it is evident that 96 will have more than 6 factors as it is a multiple of 12. Answer: 96

 

9. How many such pairs of letters are there in the word STAPLER each of which has as many letters between them in the word as in the English alphabet?

(a) None       (b) One        (c) Two         (d) Three      (e) More than three

Solution:
S        T        A        P        L        E       R
19      20      1        16      12      5        18

The only pairs matching the condition are: S and T, S and P. Answer: Two

 

10. In a certain code, MODEL is written as ‘513#2’ and DEAR is written as ‘3#%8’. How is LOAD written in that code?

(a) 21%3      (b) 23%1      (c) 25%3      (d) 21#3       (e) None of these

Solution: Simple. If you observe carefully, the letters correspond to a symbol or a number. L will be 2, O will be 1, A will %, D will be 3. Answer: 21%3
